HR, Quality Assurance, Workshop Mgr, and Laboratory Technologist Jobs at KEFRI

Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) is a state corporation undertaking research in forestry and Natural resources. KEFRI is ISO 14001:2004 certified on Environmental Management System.

The Institute wishes to recruit qualified persons for the vacant positions outlined below:
 
Chief Human Resources Management Officer: KEFRI RF 13
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Head of human resource division; 
  • Planning, coordination, budgeting and control; 
  • allocate duties and supervision of staff in the division; 
  • prepare, negotiate and sign performance contract with the Deputy Director, Finance and Administration and cascade to staff in the division; 
  • provide human resources requirements and development in the institute; 
  • formulate and enforce human resources procedures and regulations; 
  • organize implement and evaluate human resources policies; 
  • coordinate training and development of employees; 
  • staff appraisal and promotion, discipline, deployment; 
  • separation; provide guidance on human resources management and development policy matters; 
  • management of staff pensions, group life assurance , group personal accidents and medical scheme; 
  • handle legal and industrial matters; 
  • review and implement terms and conditions of service; 
  • handle career development of staff; 
  • monitoring and evaluation of the division’s activities; 
  • and compile the division’s quarterly annual reports.
Requirements for Appointment
  • Served satisfactorily at the position of Principal Human Resource Management Officer for a minimum period of three (3) years or a comparable position.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences from a recognized institution
  • Certified Public Secretary of Kenya (CPSK) or Higher Diploma in Human Resources Management or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Master’s Degree in social Sciences from a recognized institution
  • Attended a Strategic Leadership Development Course at a recognized institution
  • Computer literacy
Quality Assurance Officer: KEFRI 10.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Promoting quality culture and performance improvement throughout the organization, 
  • ensuring the processes needed for the Environmental Management Systems/Quality management Systems in the organization are established implemented and maintained, 
  • handle performance contracting process, monitoring performance of the Environmental Management Systems (EMS)/Quality management Systems (QMS) and reporting to the Management, 
  • revising QMS/EMS processes and documenting the same in line with the changing operational environment, 
  • planning of internal audits, follow- up, management reviews, coordinating external audits as per certification contract, identifying quality and environment related training needs, 
  • liaising with external parties on matters relating to Environmental Management Systems/Quality management Systems, 
  • performing any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of the department.
Qualification for Appointment.
  • Served satisfactorily for a minimum of three (3) years in a relevant senior position
  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural resource Management/Management science/Engineering/ information Technology.
  • Master’s Degree in Natural resource Management / Management Science/ Engineering
  • Excellent skills in Report writing
  • Excellent skills in Information Technology
  • Should possess professional qualification in EMS, QMS or OHSAS
Manager – Karura Workshop: KEFRI 10
The Karura workshop is an existing Unit in KEFRI which has a fully equipped sawmill with a variety of Machines and equipment used to split logs, timber dryer, timber modeling machines and many other machines.
KEFRI Management want to operate this unit on a commercial basis with the aim of generating profits to meet all operational costs with reasonable Net profits to justify the investment.
The manager will be answerable to the Enterprise Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Carry out market research to identify the range of products in demand; 
  • use this information to plan production bearing in mind the equipment and raw material available; 
  • preparation of production and profitability budgets in consultation with the Enterprise Manager for the approval by Director; 
  • planning and supervising production ensuring that costs are managed within the approved budgets and profit margins safeguarded; 
  • setting up and implementing quality control systems to ensure that manufactured products meet market expectations; 
  • planning and implementing marketing strategies that will help create a profitable niche for KEFRI products; 
  • organize employee training programmes in areas that will promote efficiency and quality of products; 
  • maintenance of all vehicles and equipment to ensure optimum performance; 
  • security of all assets at the mill including equipment;
  •  vehicles; 
  • raw material and finished products; 
  • preparation of monthly management reports for the Director in consultation with the Enterprise Manager analyzing levels of production for the month; 
  • sales and profits; 
  • with an explanation on deviations from set targets.
Requirements for Appointment 
  • Served satisfactorily for a minimum period of three (3) years in a busy workshop in a relevant position 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing management from a recognized Institution 
  • Diploma in sales Management / workshop management Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Proficiency in accounting practices and procedures Computer literacy
Principal Laboratory Technologist: KEFRI 10
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, evaluate and implement laboratory services; 
  • develop, validate and implement standard laboratory operation procedures, assess new analytical techniques and kits; 
  • ensure the development of appropriate specifications for laboratory chemicals and equipments; 
  • coordinate activities towards achievement and maintenance of international quality assurance and laboratory accreditation; 
  • carry out routine calibration and preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment; implement quality control procedures in laboratories;
  •  plan and communicate to staff and clients through seminars, field days, workshops and conferences; 
  • ensure compliance with laboratory safety measures; 
  • identify training needs and organize relevant training for laboratory staff at the Institute’s level; 
  • plan, budget, supervise and evaluate laboratory services at the Institute’s level; 
  • coordinate provision of laboratory services and facilities, assist in research studies
Requirements for Appointment
  • Served satisfactorily for a minimum of three (3) years in the position of Senior Laboratory Technologist in the institute or in a comparable position in a similar institution;
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) of a minimum grade “C-“ (C minus) or its equivalent, with a minimum “C” plain in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics;
  • Bachelors Degree in laboratory technology or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Masters Degree in laboratory technology or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Any of the following achievements: an author of a scientific referred journal paper or a relevant book chapter, and in addition an author of one Technical Note/Research Note/two Technical Guidelines/two information leaflets; OR an author of verifiable papers in a scientific conference/symposium proceedings and in addition an author of one Technical Note/Research Note/two Technical Guidelines/two information leaflets.
