Haki Water is UK/Kenya registered charity (http://hakiwater.org), comprising of engineers, scientists and senior managers, who apply skills and knowledge to design and deliver sustainable and innovative water engineering and treatment solutions, and enhance the lives of under-served communities.

Job Description for WASH Coordinator – Nairobi Based

Reports to:

Country Director and/or CEO

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify and plan the various stages and hygiene and sanitation deliverables of the WASH Programimplementation, provide hygiene and sanitation expertise, inputs and guidance; and ensure that hygiene and sanitation quality standards in WASH are considered during project implementation.
  • Participate in and assist operations and programmatic research, including meetings with construction contractors or WASH facilities designers in preparation to and during implementation of the hygiene and sanitation component.
  • Conduct WASH education and training activities to build the capacity of key stakeholders and community members in implementation of WASH interventions, using Community Lead Total Sanitation (CLTS), PHASE (Personal Hygiene and Sanitation Education) and/or CHAST (Children’s Hygiene and Sanitation Training) toolkits and methodologies appropriate for use in schools and at community level. This includes:
    • Updating and making recommendations to improve existing health, hygiene and sanitation education methodologies in use;
    • Conducting refresher health and sanitation training where relevant to key stakeholders and community members;
    • Supervising trained trainers, attending and following-up on meetings, activities or other community outreach activities.
    • Facilitating community exchange visits to model health communities.
    • Train and mentor Haki Water WASH interns, and ensure that the Haki Water’s ‘Manual for Training Interns and Volunteers’ is update regularly.

 

  • Guide, stay abreast and support the development/use of best practices and methodology for WASH project implementation.
  • Ensure proper provisional and final handover of WASH programs from Haki Water to both the communities, and where applicable to the local authorities.
  • Contribute to the development of tools and materials for preventative education and sanitation, including development of health promotion information, education &communicationmaterials (IEC) in liaison with the relevant project partners and stakeholders.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluation of health and sanitation activities, undertake quality control, as well as reporting on impact – propose and implement solutions to problems encountered.
  • Work closely with the Technical Coordinator, and Country Director to ensure an integrated program approach and design as well as joint response to challenges to meeting the program objectives in specific project sites.

Other Program Support Responsibilities

  • Coordinate field visits and meetings with relevant partners and stakeholders specific to WASH programs.
  • Develop project activities with timely and regularly reviewed detailed work plans.
  • Liaise with, and represent Haki Water externally on all issues related to WASH, including with relevant partners, stakeholders and collaborators on all relevant levels.
  • Assist in planning, implementation and maintaining of records of field activities.
  • Assist – in close consultation with the Kenya Country team -in preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reports relating to the project, and reporting requirements back to donors, complying with relevant policies and regulations as specified in the grant agreement.
  • Manage project expenditure, prepare and submit monthly cash flow reports in line with objectives, timelines and budgets.
  • Organize and coordinate WASH promotional and fundraising activities.
  • Strengthen social mobilization through networks with relevant partners, stakeholders, collaborators and partnership on implementation.
  • Undertake any other tasks that may be delegated by the Country Director that are in keeping with the scope of the role.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate should have degree/diploma in Social Science, or Community Health and Development, or qualifications in health and hygiene promotion.
  • At least 5 years work experience in Health and Development activities targeting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Conversant with health promotion school initiatives – PHASE/CHAST. Additional knowledge of PHAST/CLTS (Participatory Health and Sanitation Transformation) would be considered an advantage.
  • Proven experience in community mobilization and networking in the nonprofit/social enterprise sector.
  • Good organizational and project management skills.
  • A sound understanding of financial control procedures, and experience of developing and monitoring budgets
  • Skills in organizing and conducting participatory learning approaches for Community Health Workers and Trainer of Trainees.
  • Should be a team player, a good communicator and the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Computer literate, particularly in the use of MS office and excel.

  • Flexible and able to travel within Kenya at short notice.
