Law Interns and Internal Auditor at Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR)

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an independent National Human Rights Institution created by Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and established by the Government of Kenya through an Act of Parliament (the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act, 2011) and under the United Nations Paris Principles. 

KNCHR’s mandate includes furthering the protection and promotion of human rights in Kenya, acting as a watchdog over the Government in the area of human rights, and the provision of leadership in moving the country towards a human rights state. 

KNCHR fulfils its human rights mandate through a number of programmes, including Research and Compliance, Public Education and Training, Complaints and Investigations, Redress and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.


The Commission’s main office is in Nairobi with three regional offices in Wajir, Kitale and Mombasa. Officers may serve in the Head Office or in any of the regional offices.

KNCHR hereby invites applications for the following positions in its head office:

Internal Auditor

Ref: KNCHR/ADM/IA/5/13 
Reports to: Commission Secretary
 
Location: Head Office, with occasional travel
 
Duration: Permanent and Pensionable
 
Gross Salary Range: Kshs 205,850-265,410

Key duties and responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain effective internal audit mechanisms
  • Identify and profile various risks inherent in specific audit assignment, discuss them with the respective managers and jointly agree on actions to be implemented for risk mitigation.
  • Prepare reports on audit findings and jointly agree with managers on action plans to address identified risks and control challenges.
  • Maintain liaison with audit clients (Heads of Department) to enhance the control environment within the Commission through regular follow-ups and consultation
  • Prepare neat, detailed, understandable and cross-referenced work papers to evidence work done and for future references, in compliance with standards for professional practice in internal audit
  • Execute audit activities to ensure reliability and integrity of information and effective use of the Commission resources and compliance with contracts, standards and policies.
  • Present reports to the Internal Audit Committee and follow up audit recommendations to ensure timely implementation
  • Ascertaining compliance with established, policies, plans, procedures and processes at KNCHR
  • Ascertaining the reliability of management data developed within KNCHR
  • Any other duties assigned by the Audit Committee Carry out special audit assignments as need arises and carry out follow up audit reviews
  • Any other duties assigned by the Audit Committee
Experience & Academic Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Accounting or Finance with five years relevant experience of which one is at a supervisory role
Or
  • A Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance with seven years relevant experience of which three are at a supervisory role.
  • Professional accounting qualification (CPA Part III or ACCA).
  • Internal Audit Certification (CIA)
  • Conversant with GOK and development partners procedures

In addition to the above qualifications, the suitable candidate should posses the following Skills and Attributes;
  • Very good report writing ,presentation, organization and analytical skills
  • Good communication, interpersonal and people management skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Excellent computer skills in computer packages such as ms office excel, power point, and access.
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and to meet deadlines
  • High level of personal integrity, professionalism and respect for confidentiality
Internship
Ref: KNCHR/ADM/I/6/13
Purpose: Interns for Complains and Investigations and Redress Departments 
2 Positions
 
Duration: 12 months
 
Duty Station: Nairobi, with occasional field visits

​Key Duties

  • Assist in programme implementations.
  • Assisting in running and maintaining the KNCHR’s various programme
  • Any other task that may be assigned by Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and Programme Officers.
Key Qualifications and Competencies
  • Holder of a Degree and a post graduate Diploma in Law from a recognised institution
  • Excellent IT skills, with working knowledge of the various packages.
  • Must be able to work effectively and take guidance from seniors.
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills.
  • Proven research, writing and communication capability
  • Some exposure in a relevant field will be an added advantage

  • Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
