Humanitarian Trainer at RedR UK

Purpose: To lead and provide Humanitarian trainings; embedding humanitarian trainings into security projects, as well as other training activities for RedR‘s programme in Kenya, support the overall programme, and develop Associate trainers capacities.

Responsible to: Training  Manager
 

Working with: Colleagues and staff in the Kenya programme  International Programme Desk, L&D team in UK,  organisational partner in East Africa and other relevant contacts

Responsible for: Associate Trainers who have been identified for specific events
 

Location: Nairobi, Kenya with travel to field locations for training events
 
Post: National, Full-time.
 
Period: Fixed term for 12 months, subject to funding
 
Hours: 5 days per week.
 
Salary: 1,206,328/= KES per annum (Grade 4, Step 3)

RedR and the work we do
Each year millions of people around the world feel the effects of natural disaster and conflict. 
RedR is an international charity that improves the effectiveness of disaster relief, helping save and rebuild the lives of people affected by disaster worldwide. 
We do this by delivering essential training and support to relief organisations and their staff, and by supplying skilled professionals to humanitarian programmes.
RedR UK in Kenya has a grant from ECHO to support capacity building of humanitarians in Northern Eastern Kenya through a series of safety and security events that also embed humanitarian principles. 
A main role of the humanitarian trainer is to support this project.

Background

RedR UK has an established Country programme in Kenya and based on the clearly demonstrated need in our strategic priorities (2013-2015) and Kenya’s Learning Needs Assessment; we focus on resilience across the humanitarian system and across the region. 
This in turn means RedR is committed to developing programming for both humanitarians and humanitarian organisations in novel areas as well as in the traditional RedR competencies. 
To best deliver capacity building interventions RedR will also continue to partner with INSO Kenya, NSP, the South Sudan NGO Forum and other relevant security coordination partners.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead on development of integrating humanitarian training in the ECHO funded ‘ Improving and supporting NGOs security management practices in Kenya’
  • Design and develop training packages for organisational bespoke capacity building events
  • Work with the Training Manager to build the capacities of Associate Trainers
  • Develop innovative ways of delivering existing RedR Humanitarian events
  • Work with the KIRA team on training aspects of the project
  • Plan, convene and deliver general courses and workshops in Kenya.
  •  Keep up to date with developments in training methodology and security issues in humanitarian relief
  • Contribute to the design, planning and reviewing of courses for RedR’s programme in Kenya
  • Work with the Training e Manager (TM), Security Trainer to ensure consistency in use of materials and training practice.
  • Ensure the efficient administration and smooth running of the courses convened by the post holder though working with the Training Assistant(s) and other relevant team members.
  • Lead the process of systematic data-collection and analysis to support ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the programme. Work with the Training Manager to ensure that all information required is gathered, evaluate the impact and make recommendations for future training activities.
  • Support the Training Manager in course monitoring and evaluation processes, by ensuring the collection of completed participants course reports and completion of a training report at the end of each event, monthly project reports etc.
  • Provide feedback and peer evaluations to the TM on Associate Trainers in order to enhance their professional abilities.
  • Ensure that the Marketing Assistant has necessary information for marketing of RedR courses, and oversee contacts with NGOs, circulation of information and updates regarding courses.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Solid experience in field of training in humanitarian related subjects
  • Experience of working in the field in the capacity of a humanitarian worker
  • Experience of Needs Assessments in the field, i.e. KIRA, MIRA, Red Cross 24- 72 hour assessments
  • Tertiary qualification in Education, Training or other relevant subject area. Professional, accredited certificates in training are also accepted.
  • An understanding of adult learning and ways of engaging learners experientially
  • Ability to contribute to the development of new courses
  • Experience in capacity building and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A sounds appreciation of some of the range of technical and personal issues facing relief workers such as; international law, codes and standards, gender, conflict and security issues.
  • Proven record of excellent people skills, including good communication and inter-personal skills
  • Understanding and experience in facilitation of training in foreign cultures.
  • Commitment to humanitarian relief and knowledge of the sector
  • Excellent computer skills, with good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to adapt to different contexts
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Ability and willingness to travel within East Africa
