Adherence Nurse at Shining Hope for Communities

Shining Hope for Communities has developed an innovative, community-driven model to combat inter-generational cycles of poverty and gender inequality in Nairobi’s Kibera slum.

We link free schools for girls to accessible social services for all. 


In August 2009, we founded The Kibera School for Girls, the first entirely free school for girls in Kibera.

The second step of our model provides the community-at-large with tangible benefits through a community center adjacent to the school.

The unique services we offer include sanitary eco-toilets, a library and cyber café, gender violence support, microenterprise for HIV positive women, a youth center, access to water, business and literacy training, and hundreds of jobs.

We also operate the Johanna Justin-Jinich Community Clinic, which specializes in primary care and maternal health.

By investing in health and economic success through a school for girls, we demonstrate that benefitting women benefits the whole community, cultivating a community ethos that makes women respected members of society.


Shining Hope for Communities invites applications from suitably qualified applicants to fill the following vacant position:-

Adherence Nurse
Location: Kibera
Reports to: Clinic Medical Coordinator
Hours: Monday- Friday, 8am to 4pm, 1 Saturday a month

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Triaging patients attending HIV Clinic and taking the necessary action.
  • Counselling of patients i.e.
  1. Couple counseling
  2. Post Pharmacy counseling
  3. Offer PWP services
  4. Initial counselling of patients visiting the Clinic for the first time
  5. Adherence counselling
  6. Psychological counselling especially to mothers whose children turn positive after intervention
  • Assist the Clinical Officer in updating MOH tools, refill of drugs when needed,
  • Performing other nursing procedures which includes:-
  1. Intravenous fluids, dressing, injections, and ordering of drugs.
  2. Performing VIAL Villi including biopsy, pap smears and referrals if needed.
  3. Assisting nurses in ANC/PNC, TB Clinic when need arises
  4. Infection prevention including dumping, dusting, disinfection, making sure instruments are well cleaned and sterilized, cough triage, room ventilation
  • Monitoring HIV Clinic patients attendance by
  1. Adhering to the diary system.
  2. Inform the Community Health Workers to follow up patients who need priority home visits. This means documenting promptly the missed appointment book.
  3. Initiating priority home visits where need arises.
  4. Encouraging all patients to be seen with their partners.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of all activities to preserve patients dignity.
  • Preparing equipment and ensuring examination rooms are clean and stocked with required supplies and materials;
  • Assisting the CO in updating MOH tools, refills of drugs when needed;
  • Administering prescribed medications, injections and treatments in accordance with nursing standards;
  • Maintaining and reviewing patient records, charts and other pertinent information;
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality;
  • Performing other related duties within the clinic as may be assigned.
Requirements
  • Must have good counseling communication skills.
  • Key knowledge on CCC.
  • Be familiar with fxn of CTX/ARVs/Multi-vitamins in both paediatrics and adults.
  • Had knowledge on ARVs S/E and mode of action.
  • Knowledge on POP and PMTCT mandatory.
  • Well conversant with evaluation of drug adherence i.e. pill count and visits.
  • Routine baseline investigation.
  • Knowledge of 1st line regimen and 2nd line regimen drugs.
  • Must have 2 years working experience and above working in a busy CCC set up.
Academic Qualifications
  • Diploma in Nursing from registered institution.
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Have a valid practicing license.
  • Able to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Should be TB knowledgeable.
