Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Rations Unit and the Quality Food Inspector, UNSOA, the Rations Quality and Assurance Assistant will perform functions relating to physical examination and sensory analysis of products / materials, primarily foodstuffs, as well as the documented verification of the quality of rations imported/provided by the Rations Contractor, according to the required standards under the Rations Contract and related UN Standard.

Duties and Responsibilities
Specifically the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
  • Monitor Contractors’ incoming shipments as well as Contractors’ Kenya procured items in Mombasa;
  • Compile accompanying documentation – Health, Veterinary, Sanitary and Phyto-sanitary and safety certifications to conform to contract specification based on EU, ISO, Codex Alimentarius and HACCP standards and any other documents as required by the contract;
  • Provide Quality Assurance based on the accepted Quality Control Plan of the Contractor and according to the terms of the contract;
  • Monitor quality of products (organoleptic) and services delivered by the Contractor, within the terms of the contract;
  • Examine, verify and review the contract terms to ensure food supplied by the contractor conforms to the UN Statement of Work;
  • Verify and ensure contract procedures, as per set industry standards are properly executed and followed up at Rations Contractors’ Mombasa warehouse;
  • Ensure follow up of Rations Logistics supported from the Rations Contractors’ warehouse and all logistics pertaining to CRP’s received and stored in Mombasa for onward shipping;
  • Conduct regular inspections at the contractor’s facility (warehouse and vehicles) to ascertain wholesomeness, validation and warranty of products as well as Contractors’ full compliance with the Quality Control plan and conditions under the contract.
  • Conduct follow-up / trail inspections to ensure compliance with directives /instructions;
  • Organize inspection of subcontractors’ premises to ascertain hygienic and quality preparations / services;
  • Inform the Chief, Rations Unit of any discrepancies or disparities within the provision of the Rations Contract;
  • Provide professional advice and solutions on quality issues with photo evidence to substantiate;
  • • Conduct checks of expiration dates / shelf life of Emergency Reserve food rations (Dry/ CRPs/ Bottled water) outlined in the Rations Contract warranty requirements and specifications;
  • Collect information required for movements; submit CMR’s as and when required;
  • Ensure the timely dispatch of rations for troops supported from the Mombasa warehouse;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:
 
Education: Secondary Certificate.
 
Experience: At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in Rations handling and monitoring. Experience in hygiene and food safety management (ISO 22,000) and auditing is preferable. Minimum 3 years UN/NGO experience or other international bodies is a requirement. Training in logistics or related fields will be considered.
 
Desirable: Operation of the United Nations Electronic Inventory System (Galileo) and a Resident of Mombasa are desirable.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English.
Skills: Computer skills, Excel spread sheets.
