MAT Clinic Nurse at Mathari Hospital

Primary Function: Provide nursing service and patient care at the Mathari Hospital MAT Clinic.
Key Responsibilities
1. Assessment.
  • Triage and emergency response at the MAT clinic
  • Conducting vital signs for all MAT clients.
2. Implementation
  • Conduct screening for all new clients for eligibility into MAT
  • Assess patients for drug withdrawal and intoxication symptoms.
  • Educate new clients on the rule and regulations of the clinic in line with the SOPS.
  • Administer breathalyzer test for alcohol.
  • Carry out HIV testing and counseling for all clients and subsequently enroll those who are positive into care.
  • Carry out pretest counseling and referral for hepatitis B & C testing.
  • Conduct individual and group addiction counseling sessions.
  • Administer Hepatitis B vaccine to all eligible clients
  • Review TB status for all patients
  • Ensure that laboratory results are filed and communicated to the patients at all times
  • Ensure that patients CD4 counts are up to date on every visit.
3. Evaluation
  • Consult with MAT clinical team if patient not meeting the eligibility criteria.
  • Evaluate for any withdrawal symptoms the MAT client on the scheduled clinic visit.
4. Departmental and Program
  • Follows the communications protocols.
  • Maintains the equipment in proper and safe manner.
  • Assess the work environment for safety concerns and seeks out appropriate solutions.
  • Ensure that MAT patient records are well maintained in consultation with the clinician.
Reporting: The MAT clinic nurse reports to the MAT clinic nursing officer in-charge and the in-charge of the nursing department.

Qualifications
  • Diploma in nursing (KRCHN)
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Knowledge in HIV care and treatment
  • Counselling skills
  • Addiction counseling skills and People who Inject drugs (PWID)  care and management experience is an added advantage.
