Mental Health Nurse at International Rescue Committee

Job Purpose / Objective: The Mental health Nurse reports directly to the Mental Health Officer. He/she will be expected to work within the integrated community health program and collaborate with the other program sectors in implementation of activities

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and conduct mental health assessments, diagnose and plan individual case management of psychiatric patients in the camp and refer accordingly.
  • Conduct individual home-visits on specific demanding cases.
  • Develop nursing care plans for psychiatric patients admitted into the ward and liaise treatment plans with the clinical services program.
  • Participate in developing community networks to support mental health patients in the community.
  • Provide psychiatric support through use of individual or group counseling and psychotherapy.
  • Train mental health assistants, Community Health Promoters and other groups exposed to care of persons with mental health disorders
  • Supervise mental health assistants and ensure that data records for all the patients attended at the clinics are well kept
  • Compile weekly and monthly reports.
  • Participate in intra and inter-program meetings as well as general staff meetings
  • Liaise with other implementing partners within the refugee camp in advocacy for mental health clients
  • Engage CHPs and block health committees in identification and referral of persons with mental disorders.
  • Keep the management informed on all significant developments in the program
  • Ensure program  supplies are ordered in a timely manner
  • Keep inventory and records for all program items and supplies
  • Carry out any other duties assigned as delegated by the supervisor
Key Result Areas
  • Updating databases for all the mentally ill clients in the community maintained
  • Initiation of community participation as a PHC approach through community education
  • Defaulter tracing of patients on treatment  to ensure drug compliance
  • Formation of psychosocial support groups for patients with mental problems.
Required Qualifications:
  • Diploma in nursing from a recognized nurse training institution,
  • Diploma/certificate in counselling or social work
  • Registered with the relevant body.
Required Experience & Competencies:
  • 3 years working experience in a Mental health unit/clinic is a must
  • Previous experience in working within a community setting desirable.
  • Experience of working in a resource poor setting and/or camp environment is an added advantage
  • Language preferences: Fluency in Turkana/ Somali/ an added advantage.
  • Must be a good team player
  • Must be flexible and culturally sensitive
  • Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation skills
