ACTED is a non-governmental organization whose vocation is to support vulnerable population world wide and to accompany them in building a better future.
ACTED was created in 1993, is governed by the French law and has its head quarters in Paris, France.
ACTED Kenya is looking for an experienced self driven and a self oriented professional to fill the post of a GIS Officer.
I. Main objective:
The GIS Officer’s main role is to support the operational framework of the GIS Unit and provide GPS technical support to partner Agencies.
II. Responsibilities:

  • Oversee GPS data collection conducted by 5 Agencies through regular communications and follow-up;
  • Ensure that data is collected in the proper format and prepare data for mapping;
  • Provide GPS technical support to partner Agencies by e-mail, phone or in person; this may require travel to field locations where partner Agencies are actively working;
  • Train relevant ACTED and partner Agencies on use of maps, GPS and geo-data collection techniques; and
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with use of Excel data entry tools.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and a self-starter. While the selected candidate will report directly to the GIS Manager, it is expected that s/he will conduct all work with minimal supervision and direction. Attention to detail is extremely important as a key component of this post involves data management.
Furthermore, the selected candidate must be willing and able to travel at short notice and possibly for extended periods of time in Kenya. Experience as a trainer or educator is desired.
A high level of confidence and strong public speaking skills are required as this position involves preparing and conducting formal and informal training sessions.
S/he must be resourceful and able to familiarize her/himself with operations of a variety of GPS units via online resources. Familiarity with mobile applications (specifically, GPS-relevant mobile phone applications) is highly desired.
Should all candidates possess similar professional and educational experience to carry out the aforementioned tasks, preference will be given to the candidate who also possesses the ability to:

  • Conceptualize and prepare maps and other cartographic products using ArcGIS products; working knowledge of the latest version of the software, i.e., ArcGIS 10;
  • Work closely with ACTED staff to ensure that GIS service needs and map requests are delivered on time and as requested within the context of a demanding work environment with quick-turnaround deadlines;
  • Design methodologies for collecting GPS and other GIS-related data according to need; maintain extremely high level of organization and documentation of all methodologies used;
  • Aid in data collection, entry, and analysis as needed;
  • Manage spatial datasets, and verify and update collected data; maintain the strictest confidentiality of sensitive data; ensure protocols for usage and licensing of procured GIS datasets are carefully followed;
  • Prepare metadata for all spatial data;
  • Co-develop GIS components in proposals and oversee implementation in approved projects;
  • Represent ACTED in GIS-related coordination meetings, and collaborate with implementing partners on GIS-related issues; and
  • Perform other duties as required.
