icipe – African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics. 
icipe has 400 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Computer Programmer in R and/or other programming languages (C, C++ and Java) in the Earth Observation and Modelling Unit.

The position is tenable in Nairobi, Kenya at the icipe Duduville campus. 

This is a one-year contract with a possibility of extension pending funding.
 
Overall purpose of the job

To assist in the development of a multipurpose classifier modelling tool for successful intervention of icipe’s R&D activities.


Specific Responsibilities and Duties
  • Develop a multipurpose classifier using advanced learning algorithms such as Random Forest (RF), Neural Network (NN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM), using “R” software language.
  • Support the development of interfaces for the multipurpose classifier.
  • Develop databases for IMP practices and satellite imagery for crop and vector-borne disease occurrences.
Knowledge Required for Performing the Job
  • Knowledge of programming tools in R and/or C/C++, Java, Eclipse and other programming languages.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence concepts is desirable.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • BSc degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, statistics or related degree (from a university or technological institute)
  • Experience in object-oriented programming is desirable.

Reporting
This position reports to the two Principal Investigators in the Earth Observation and Modelling Unit.
