Reports to: Deputy Project Health Coordinator
 
Relationships internally: All programme and support staff
 
Relationships externally: MoMS / MoPHS personnel, other governmental, UN agencies counterparts.
 
Contract Period: Contract upto 31st December 2013 – renewable 2014
 
Salary: KShs 65,000 per month
 
Benefits: Insurance cover, house allowance at 15% of basic salary, and annual leave entitlement of 24 days per annum at the completion of 12 months of continuous employment with Merlin.

Overall Objective of the Position

The overall objective of the position is to manage and supervise the stabilization center in Kaikor Health Centre supported by Merlin project in Turkana County. 

The post holder will manage and organize the SC staff and work in close collaboration with the MoH and Merlin staff at the district level.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • To manage and organize the running of the stabilization centre(SC)
  • Daily examination, consultation and medical management of all the children admitted in SC as per the national guideline on in patient management.
  • To supervise the SC team in following correct procedures including
  1. Admission Criteria
  2. Carrying out correct anthropometric measurements
  3. Rehydration of children on admission
  4. Following correct nutrition and medical management of SC clients as per the IMAM guideline
  5. Conduct regular weight and height measurements of malnourished children
  6. Prepare diet, calculate the amounts of feeds, and distribute and record the amount of food taken by the malnourished child
  7. Administer oral medication, assess and record clinical signs, and record all information in the Multi-chart.
  8. Support mothers to feed the child.
  9. Following correct discharge or transfer procedures(to other hospitals departments)
  • Ordering or supervising the pharmacy request, ensuring correct and rational use of all drugs/medications
  • Ensure data collection and reporting on a daily/weekly/monthly and submitted to health records office.
  • Monitor and supervise the nurses ,PA’s to ensure correct amounts of milk, plumpynuts are given to the children
  • Assist and mentor the pediatrics staffs in the implementation of the stabilization centre(SC) activities within the pediatric ward and ensure the management of the commodities(food, drugs and equipments)
  • Train and support the pediatrics staff inpatient of severe acute malnutrition case management according to MOH guidelines
  • Together with the project officer ensure proper communication ,coordination and harmonization of tools with the different stakeholders involved in food/nutrition activities(MOH, IRC, WVI, UNICEF)
  • Ensure the establishment of nutrition growth monitoring and train health staff in case detection and referral system
  • Participate in the delivery of training for health staff, capacity building and conduction of studies and surveys
  • Ensure work allocation of roles and responsibilities is delegated according to the organogram to provide effective service in liaison with the ward in charge.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine with at least three years experience in supervising the implementation of IMAM/EPI/PHC Programmes in Turkana
  • Experience in the implementation of nutrition monitoring activities and malnutrition case detection and management
  • Experience of carrying out nutrition surveys at field level
  • Fluent spoken and written English, and can write clear and concise reports
  • Excellent management, communication, training and analysis skills
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Computer skills, including EPI-info package
