SCI is implementing humanitarian and development programmes in thematic areas of Health, Nutrition, Food Security & Livelihoods, and Child Protection in Northern region of Kenya. 
The country office is located in Nairobi with programme offices in Dadaab, Wajir, El Wak (Mandera Central district) Takaba (Mandera West district), Bungoma and Turkana.

SCI with funding from DFID and ECHO is implementing integrated health and nutrition project in Wajir County..

Save the Children is supporting the Ministry of Health Health in hiring 14 Nurses for Wajir County.

Nursing Officer

Job Specification
This will be the entry grade into the Nursing Officers’ Cadre (diploma holders only). 
Work at this level is limited in scope and complexity, and will be carried out under the guidance of a more experienced senior officer. 
Areas of deployment will include hospital, health centre, dispensary or community setting.Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities involve
  • assessing patients’ needs and planning, executing and evaluating nursing care to individual patients or clients at an out-patient department or ward in a hospital, health Centre, dispensary or community.
  • In addition the officer is expected to admit and discharge patients in an in-patient setting; give health talks and counseling to clients, patients and members of their families; administer drugs, vaccines/sera and contraceptives and nutrition services; and guide and counsel junior staff. 
  • Besides, the officer is expected to maintain documentation of activities undertaken, events and occurrences, and observation made.  
  • And also; should be able to provide nutrition activities (HINI package) both at the health facility and catchment outreach sites; which involves the following key responsibilities among others;
  • Ensure that every beneficiary receives the routine medication including vitamin A, dewormers and measles immunization during distributions and follow up.
  • Ensure that any beneficiary requiring further medical assistance is referred in accordance with protocols
  • Record all symptoms of beneficiaries and medication given and complete the child’s card at every visit.
  • Responsible for stock management and reporting (distribution monitoring, use of non-expired drugs, stock ordering etc.).
  • Handle the beneficiaries in a sensitive and reassuring manner and ensure their privacy and customs  are respected
  • Ensure that all equipment is in good working order and cleaned, ready for the next distribution
  • Assist the community health workers implementing nutrition activities to develop monthly work plans and provide mentorship to them.
  • Promote and ensure that mothers respect basic hygiene principles as well the public by providing health education
  • Responsible for Promoting exclusive breastfeeding as well as complementary feeding at community level.
  • Responsible for ensuring water availability for hands / body and clothes washing
  • Ensure secure storage for medication and food and proper record keeping
  • Ensure caretakers receive basic health education on feeding, hygiene and health
  • In liaison with Nutrition Officer and health facility staff develop and maintain a referral system at community level in which community health workers refer malnourished children and mothers needing special attention to the health facilities
RequirementsFor appointment to the grade of Nursing Officer III, a candidate must:-
  • Have successfully completed a three and a half years (3 1/2) years pre-service training at a Kenya Medical Training College or at any other recognized training institution and have been awarded the Kenya Registered Nurse or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse Diploma.
  • Be in possession of registration certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Must be in possession of a valid practice license
  • Must be of good professional standing
