Project Intern at Women Educational Researchers of Kenya (WERK)

Background:

The Women Educational Researchers of Kenya (WERK) is a professional association of researchers committed to democratic principles and the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion or gender with interest in education, gender and development. The goal of WERK is to build a gender equitable Kenyan society through linking research to action and advocacy.

Jielimishe is a GEC project that is in three counties (Laikipia, Meru and Mombasa) and targets interventions in 60 schools (20 primary and 40 secondary schools). The objective of the project is to increase life chances of marginalized girls. WERK is contracted as the External Evaluator and the Midline consultant.

Position: Project Intern

The project intern position is a three month (renewable) position will expose fresh graduates to the education and social science research environment. The position combines both administrative and technical exposure.

Overall Responsibility:

The project intern – Jielimishe will support the project lead and any other consultants in administrative and logistics that are required for the smooth running of the activities related to the Jielimishe project. The intern, under the guidance of the project lead will follow up on any relevant accounting documents and other supporting documents.

Specific Responsibilities:

Project Related

· Support the project lead in comparing the baseline data and the current available data for the girls in the project

· Analysis of the available baseline data as per the data entry template of the baseline

· Support the Data Analyst during the data entry process

· Work with the Data Analyst to ensure that the midline data is cleaned

· Support the Data Analyst in any tasks as approved by the Project Lead

Administrative Related

· Ensure all the required materials for the quarterly spot checks and midline are prepared and sent to the various contact persons in the counties;

· Follow up and receive all materials from the field (confirm that they are received as per the checklists)

· Follow up on all the contracts and ensure they are appropriately filed

· Follow up on all the accounting documents and ensure they are appropriately filed

Qualifications:

· The candidate should posses a bachelors degree in social sciences or data analysis

· The candidate should be below 30 years and should have graduated within the last 5 years

· Understanding of any statistical package or analysis software will be an added advantage

· Any previous experience in a research environment (or participation in research process) will also be an added advantage

Key Competencies:

· Ability to attend to detail

· Ability to do basic analysis of data

· Ability to work with minimal supervision (and self motivated)
